MEDIA MARKET
AFRICAN FORESTS STORY GRANT
Are you a journalist passionate about uncovering stories where forests and communities meet? We want to hear your pitch.
Who is this grant for?
Journalists collaborating with regional African media outlets who have a strong record of reporting on environmental, climate or community issues and have not yet received a GLF grant.
What stories are we looking for?
We want to portray Africa’s forest frontlines – communities driving sustainable forest management and conservation. We will help successful applicants connect with changemakers engaged in the REDD+ mechanism and the GLFx network to illustrate how local action strengthens livelihoods, protects ways of life and delivers global impact.
Your story may explore how forests intersect with either community well-being, climate and biodiversity action, gender equality, youth engagement, inclusive decision-making, sustainable REDD+/forest finance, land tenure rights, Indigenous Peoples’ leadership, local livelihoods, governance, connecting this with Sustainable Development Goals among other global goals.
How to apply?
Submit a 250-word pitch here by 19 November 2025 outlining your original story idea. Include key angles, preferred format (written, audio, audiovisual, visual or multimedia), and a brief dissemination plan, along with a letter of interest or commitment from your editor. Stories should be based in one or more African countries or regions where communities participate in REDD+ (map here) and GLFx chapters (map here). Applications are welcome in English or French.
What does the grant include?
The African Forests Story Grant, an initiative of the UN-REDD Programme, the African Forest Forum (AFF) and the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), will support three journalists with USD 500 each and personalized editorial guidance from the REDD+ and GLFx teams. Payment will be made upon publication. Stories must be published by 14 December 2025.
The application deadline is 19 November 2025. Finalists will be announced by 26 November 2025. The grant may be declared void if none of the proposals are considered viable.
