Bees play an important role in enhancing biodiversity in an ecosystem and also help conserve Kenya’s protected areas. Beekeeping is also a complementary land
use to wildlife and livestock keeping, and has been proven to be useful for mitigating human-elephant conflict among rural farmers.
Community benefits
Beekeeping and honey production is conducted in the rangelands that cover 80% of Kenya. Therefore, beekeeping has the potential to provide employment, especially for the youth, increase household incomes, support crop pollination, increase yields for food security, and enhance biodiversity. We work directly with user groups like community forest associations and other community members, living near protected areas and conservancies in Kenya. By purchasing honey directly from these groups, we incentivize them to take part in nature-based businesses like beekeeping that also enhance their livelihoods.
Business model
Bee Works Africa is a social enterprise aiming to link communities to markets. We purchase honey from local communities living close to protected and conserved areas in Kenya and supply markets in Nairobi as well as export markets, ensuring positive impacts for both people and nature.
We focus on bee-keeping because it is a low-investment and low-risk activity that can have a big impact. Our approach is nature-based and complements existing livelihoods, helping communities adapt to climate change while preserving biodiversity.
