About GLF Africa 2024

Can Africa show the world a sustainable way forward? The climate crisis is taking a toll on Africa – and especially on rural communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

On 17 September, thousands of participants gathered at ‘GLF Africa 2024: Greening the African Horizon’ in Nairobi, Kenya, and online for a global conference focused on forging a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa’s land- and seascapes, driven by local solutions.

About this session

Since the late 2000s, billions have been invested in African restoration efforts, such as the Great Green Wall and AFR100 Initiative, which have mobilized over $10 billion. These projects focus on rehabilitating degraded lands with local communities, who rely on these lands for agriculture and are vulnerable to climate impacts.

While progress has been made, a coordinated national strategy could further enhance the impact by aligning restoration with social welfare programs, which support vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and low-income households. This session aims to explore ways to connect these efforts, building household resilience and restoring landscapes.
