Body text: Discover the key messages and calls to action from GLF Africa 2026: Stewarding Our Rangelands, a landmark publication drawing on insights from experts, policymakers, researchers, Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists and practitioners. It presents a roadmap for transforming how Africa’s rangelands should be are governed, financed and valued and how its pastoralist communities should be supported.
The document challenges outdated narratives around pastoralism and provides recommendations for advancing more inclusive, rights-based and sustainable rangeland governance through five interconnected themes:
- Governance and institutional coherence – Reform policies to strengthen rights, mobility and coordinated action.
- Science, data and knowledge systems – Combine scientific research with Indigenous and local knowledge to inform better decision-making.
- Finance, investment and implementation – Shift investment from short-term emergency response to long-term stewardship that benefits pastoralist communities and landscapes.
- Inclusion, equity and local action – Put pastoralists, women and youth at the center of decision-making and support community-led solutions.
- Pastoral societies and biodiversity – Recognize pastoralism as a driver of biodiversity conservation and healthy rangelands while rewarding community stewardship.
