THE LUXEMBOURG-GLF FINANCE FOR NATURE PLATFORM

A partnership between the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Global Landscapes Forum to mainstream investments for sustainable land use & climate

What is the Luxembourg-GLF Finance for Nature Platform?

Until recently, the financial sector has been slow to recognize the threat that unsustainable land-use poses for climate change, biodiversity, water use, rural poverty and (gender) inequality. The Luxembourg-GLF Finance for Nature Platform aims to shift financial flows towards sustainable land-use models that are sustainable, equitable, inclusive and profitable. This will not only boost economic returns but equally help close the huge funding gap to meet the climate change, biodiversity and land degradation targets, all critical for our health and wellbeing. To achieve this vision, the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Global Landscapes Forum have joined forces to

  • share knowledge on existing innovations and continuously build relevant (new) solutions,
  • enhance mainstreaming of sustainable finance for Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and
  • catalyze private sector engagement in sustainable land use financing.

Why Finance for Nature?

Until recently, the financial sector has been slow to recognize the threat that unsustainable land-use poses for climate change, biodiversity, water use, rural poverty and (gender) inequality. These issues can lead to asset stranding, debt defaults and reduced returns across a wide range of asset classes, including corporate loans, public and private equity, and sovereign bonds.

The way forward is to shift financial flows to sustainable land-use models. This will not only boost economic returns but equally help close the huge funding gap to meet the climate change, biodiversity and land degradation targets, all critical for our health and wellbeing.

Why a Luxembourg-GLF partnership?

Luxembourg has been one of the pioneers on sustainable finance and is ideally positioned to be a leader for natural capital investing and become a global hub for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Indeed the recently launched Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Strategy and the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative (LSFI) form part of an enabling environment to ensure acceleration of the much needed sustainable finance innovations.

Similarly, GLF is committed to share knowledge and best practices on sustainable land use finance and value chains. Building on the fruitful organization of the 4th GLF Investment Case Symposium in Luxembourg in 2019, the GLF and the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg have launched a longer term partnership. The partnership is planned for an initial period between 2021-2024.

Activities

The activities catalyze and accelerate the mainstreaming of sustainable finance and the development of innovative finance instruments that contribute to nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Knowledge management, communications, learning and capacity-building activities of the project share and accelerate the uptake of lessons learned and best practices to scale appropriate financing models for REDD+, Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), Ecosystem Restoration and sustainable supply chains.

Thus, the Platform operates as a critical catalyser for nature-based solutions financing worldwide, while promoting Luxembourg innovations, initiatives and projects.

Activities implemented in the framework of the partnership include:

  • Preparing, jointly with Luxembourg partners, relevant knowledge management and communications initiatives.
  • Designing and organizing physical and digital, and blended events in Luxembourg (webinars, workshops, online conferences, etc)
  • Engaging with key Luxembourg organisations to help them increase their engagement for sustainable finance that contributes to Nature-based Solutions to climate change.
  • Designing knowledge products jointly with Luxembourg-based organizations (publications, policy and technical briefs, news articles, fact sheets, etc).

Beneficiaries

In close coordination with the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative (LSFI), the Platform seeks to support the many key Luxembourg organisations which could benefit from increased engagement for nature-based solutions to climate change, in particular with a focus on delivering positive impacts in developing countries.

Strategies are employed to ensure that each activity and output includes and serves to address the perspectives and needs of communities in Low and Middle Income Countries. Activities design ensures the global south represents the majority of the audience the GLF’s digital media reaches.
